We have made history, this time in the field of biomethane within the framework of our range of products for the water industry. This year too, we are part of another important project relating to biomethane. We are supplying technologies for the first biomethane plant connected to a wastewater treatment plant in the Czech Republic, namely for the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant in Prague. Starting this year, the plant will produce biomethane from sludge gas and then supply it to the medium-pressure distribution network of Pražská plynárenská. This is a unique project in two ways – it is the first ever biomethane solution connected to a wastewater treatment plant in the Czech Republic and the biomethane will also be injected into the medium-pressure distribution network.

The first biomethane plant connected to a wastewater treatment plant is currently being built in the Czech Republic, and our technologies will be part of it. Thanks to our wealth of experience in the field of biomethane, we were chosen as one of the suppliers of part of the technology for the project for creation of a biomethane plant at the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant in Prague. We provided a propanisation facility for them, a container for measuring the quality and quantity of biomethane and the connections between the individual technologies.

The unique nature of the project can, among other things, be seen in the fact that the biomethane will be injected into the medium-pressure distribution network. We use regulation for this to reduce the pressure to the required value. Most of the time, the biomethane tends to be injected into a high-pressure pipeline, mainly to ensure easier acceptance by the gas companies. This is one of the reasons why a propanisation facility was part of the components supplied by us. Whereas injection of biomethane into the high-pressure distribution network no longer requires propanisation, it is still required for the medium-pressure network,” said Project Manager Tomáš Stone from HUTIRA.

Apart from the propanisation facility, we also supplied a container for measuring the quality and quantity of biomethane. This, for example, includes an Emerson Rosemount 370 XA chromatograph. “Before the biomethane is injected into the network, we need to be certain that the gas which is supposed to flow into it is of the right quality and meets certain crucial standards. Apart from the chromatograph, we therefore also analyse moisture or hydrogen sulphide values, for example,” added Tomáš Stone, saying that if the biomethane fails to meet the necessary parameters, it will be returned to the wastewater treatment plant.

We have been associated with the project since the end of 2021 and we managed to manufacture all of the necessary technological units from June last year to February this year. Apart from the container for measuring the quality and quantity of biomethane and the propanisation facility, we also provided the connections between the individual technologies within the framework of the project. The project is currently in the stage of preparation for commissioning. We have therefore successfully built on our previous activities relating to biomethane which, for example, include the project for a biomethane plant in Litomyšl, where we acted as the main supplier of the complete solution for conversion of biogas into biomethane and its subsequent injection into the high-pressure gas distribution network.

In view of its overlap into the water industry segment, the project for creation of a biomethane plant at the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant in Prague shows, among other things, the wide reach of our brand across individual sectors. Our WATER Division will be participating with its presentation at the 22nd International Water Management Exhibition Water Supplies – Sewerage. At this year’s trade fair, the name of which is abbreviated in Czech to VOD-KA, we will be happy to present our entire range of products with participation, for example, by Petr Hajný, Director of the WATER – Water Treatment and Management Technologies Division, Pavel Kazda, Head of the WATER – Sale of Products for the Water Industry Section, Radek Kundrata, Director of Sales, Marketing and Development, and also Monika Zitterbartová, Executive Director of HUTIRA green gas.
